IMD Forecasts Surge in Heatwave Days Across East, Central, and Southeast India from April to June
India Meteorological Department forecasts above-normal heatwave days in east, central, and southeast India from April to June, with mixed temperature trends and above-normal rainfall expected across most regions, except northeastern India.
During these months, maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal over many parts of the country. However, most parts of east and northeast India, along with eastern parts of central India and adjoining peninsular regions, are likely to experience above-normal maximum temperatures.
The IMD further stated that during the hot season spanning April, May, and June, above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country. Exceptions include some regions of Maharashtra and Telangana, where minimum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal.
For April specifically, the department indicated that monthly maximum temperatures are likely to be normal to below normal across many regions. At the same time, above-normal maximum temperatures are expected over large parts of east and northeast India, as well as certain areas in northwest India and southern peninsular India. Additionally, above-normal monthly minimum temperatures are most likely across most parts of India, except for some isolated pockets in the southern peninsula where normal minimum temperatures are expected.
On rainfall patterns, the IMD stated that the countrywide average rainfall during April 2026 is most likely to be above normal. Normal to above-normal rainfall is expected over most par
ts of the country, while below-normal rainfall is forecast over many parts of northeastern India.
The forecast underscores a complex climatic pattern marked by rising heatwave risks in several regions alongside variations in temperature and rainfall, signaling significant implications for weather conditions across India during the critical summer months.
